Foundations in Domestic Family and Sexual Violence (DFSV)
The WA Association for Mental Health in partnership with Domestic Abuse Resource and training (DART) presents a one-day foundation workshop on Domestic Family and Sexual Violence (DFSV). The DFSV course has been designed for people working and intersecting with families experiencing or at risk of experiencing family violence.
Description
Foundations in Working Through and DFSV Informed Lens is a one-day workshop designed for professionals working with, or likely to intersect with, families experiencing or at risk of family violence. This tailored training provides advanced knowledge and skills to deepen understanding, recognise, and effectively respond to DFSV while exploring its intersections with mental health.
Participants will be equipped to confidently identify and respond to DFSV within a DVFS-informed lens, comprehend trauma and trauma-informed practices, and assess risk associated with family and domestic violence whilst supporting survivors through safety planning.
This course utilises the West Australian Common Risk Assessment and Risk Management Framework (CRARMF), and National Action Plan, and is aligned with the National Competency CHCDFV001 Recognise and Respond to Domestic Family Violence, this course empowers attendees with essential tools for meaningful intervention.
Outcomes of Learning:
- Establish confidence in recognising and responding to DFSV
- Understanding of risk and risk factors when working with DFSV
- Awareness of trauma and trauma-informed practice
- Enhanced understanding of risk and risk indicators when working with DFSV
- A Deeper understanding of DFSV and the intersections across allied services such as mental health and AOD
- Utilising the CRARMF risk indicators and safety planning
- Utilise 4 stages of structured professional judgement
Day Overview
- Establishing your role in the service system response
- Redefining DFV and Coercive Control
- Unpacking forms of abuse and perpetrator tactics
- Let’s look at national risk factors and Risk Assessment Principles
- Identifying risk (case studies in line with CRARMF and professional judgement)
- 7-step screening process to identify risk (skills building)
- Understanding Trauma and trauma-informed practice
- Identifying the predominant aggressor (case studies) and how our systems can get it wrong
- Partnering with the survivor (skills building)
- Intersectionality and co-occurring factors (case study)
- Safety planning utilising the CRARMF (skills building)
- Adopting self-care strategies when exposed to DFSV

Catering:
Light refreshments will be available throughout the day. Microwaves and fridges are available for those participants who wish to bring their own lunch. There are also a number of cafes in the area to choose from should you wish to purchase your lunch. (Only Dairy milk provided)
