Mental Health First Aid - Conversations about Suicide
The 4-hour, in-person Mental Health First Aid Conversations about Suicide course is for any adult interested in learning practical skills to improve your confidence to provide mental health first aid to someone who is feeling suicidal.
Description
This course will give participants practical skills to:
- Recognise the signs that someone may be suicidal;
- Help the person stay safe;
- Connect people to professional and other supports; and
- Respond in a crisis situation.
At the completion of this course, you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to safely have a conversation with a person who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours.
NB: This is not a postvention course and is not recommended for individuals recently bereaved by suicide. This course is also not a therapy or a support group and it is important that people undertaking the course are feeling relatively robust when they undertake it
This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.
Wellness Responder Services:
A Wellness Responder will be in attendance during training sessions, to provide support and resources to participants should they experience a physical or mental health issue.
Lived Experience Guest Speaker:
Where appropriate, a Lived Experience Person will be invited along to a training session, to share their story, experiences, and recovery journey.
Catering:
Light refreshments will be available throughout the day. Microwaves and fridges are available for those participants who wish to bring their own lunch. There are also a number of cafes in the area to choose from should you wish to purchase your lunch. (Only Dairy milk provided)

Scholarships
There are two scholarship places available for consumers or carers who face financial difficulty in attending this course. Scholarship applications close 10 business days prior to course and the successful applicants will be notified five business days prior to commencement of the event.
