De-escalation Skills Youth
Safely and confidently de escalate challenging situations when working with young people.
Description
Who will benefit
People working with or supporting young people.
What you’ll learn
Adolescent brains are undergoing critical changes and development, so young people may respond to stress differently to adults.
By recognising when a young person’s behaviour is escalating, and taking the appropriate action early, you can de-escalate a challenging situation in a safer and more effective way.
On completion of this course you’ll have gained:
- An understanding of how escalation affects the adolescent brain, body, behaviour, and reasoning.
- An ability to identify the stages of the escalation curve as well as triggers for adolescents.
- Practical experience with the 3-step de-escalation model, to effectively de-escalate challenging situations involving young people.
- The skills to recognise signs of your own escalation and understand strategies for self-regulation.
